Nintendo Switch The Morning After: Apple finishes rebuilding its US maps

The next step? Remapping Europe.

Apple is officially done rebuilding its maps in the US

Apple Maps didn’t launch with success. Comparatively skeletal, its competition did everything better. But Apple didn’t give up. It has been rebuilding the most fundamental part of the experience — the base maps themselves. For at least the past six months, the company has been pushing live more accurate maps with better represented coastlines, airports and malls. And today the company says it’s finally done. Well, in the United States, anyway.

Contrary to my fever dreams. No new Switch in 2020

Nintendo will start selling a special Animal Crossing Switch in March, but it won’t be releasing a brand-new model this year. Shuntaro Furukawa, the gaming giant’s president and CEO, has laid rumors to rest that an upgraded version of the console is on the way. In a call with investors, the executive said the company had “no plans to launch a new Nintendo Switch model during 2020.” No Switch Pro, at least for now.

In the middle of 2019, Nintendo released an upgraded Switch with a longer battery life than the original — so that might be your best bet for the most-capable Switch console.

It’s official.

GMC will revive the Hummer as a 1,000HP electric truck

Get ready for a rebirth of the Hummer as an all-electric truck, with a full reveal due on May 20th. So far, we’ve seen its grill in a 15-second teaser, and a 30-second ad will air during the Super Bowl.

As far as specs, GMC estimates the new Hummer will have up to 1,000HP, a peak 11,500lb/ft of torque and a 0-to-60 time of around three seconds — a fair rival for the triple-motor Tesla Cybertruck if everything holds up.

Its investment in one-day shipping might be paying off.

Amazon has 150 million Prime members now

Yes, the company shared concrete numbers on… something. Amazon’s latest earnings release is one for the books and announces the company now has 150 million Prime members around the world, which is a huge step up from the 100 million it announced back in 2018. This is despite the increase in Prime membership fee from $99 to $119 a couple of years ago.

“We’ve made Prime delivery faster — the number of items delivered to US customers with Prime’s free one-day and same-day delivery more than quadrupled this quarter compared to last year,” said CEO Jeff Bezos in a statement.

Amazon also recorded $87.4 billion in revenue, which is a whopping 21 percent increase over the same time last year.

What’s range anxiety?

Musk: ‘It won’t be long’ until the Model S goes 400 miles on a charge

On Tesla’s earnings call, someone asked Elon Musk whether the Model S and Model X would switch to the same battery cells his company currently uses in the Model 3. According to the CEO, Tesla’s plan is to continue improving the battery chemistry, and he estimates the car’s current range is already in the 380-mile range. With further improvement, he believes “it won’t be long before Model S is 400 mile range.”

But wait, there’s more…

Twitter

Twitter

Licypriya Kangujam is an 8-year-old climate activist originally from Manipur but is now based in New Delhi.

Twitter

Earlier this week, Licypriya went viral after posting a video with a Twitter thread asking the media to stop referring to her as the “Greta Thunberg of India.” It was shared more than 24,000 times. The video was viewed more than 1.5 million times.

Twitter

She wrote: “Dear Media, Stop calling me ‘Greta of India’. I am not doing my activism to looks like Greta Thunberg. Yes, she is one of our Inspiration & great influencer. We have common goal but I have my own identity, story. I began my movement since July 2018 even before Greta was started.”

The same video and caption were shared to Instagram.

However, on Thursday, in the wake of going viral, Licypriya’s account was suspended by Twitter with no immediate explanation of what rules she had violated, prompting fury from activists online.

Fellow campaigners started tweeting in support of Licypriya.

twitter The Twitter account (@LicypriyaK) and Facebook of incredible 8-year-old climate activist Licypriya Kangujam from India has been suspended for no apparent reason!
They are silencing her voice! Please speak out!

Licypriya’s mother, Bidyarani Devi Kangujam Ongbi, who runs the account since it was set up in May last year, contacted BuzzFeed News to express concern.

twitter This is an attempt to shut down my Climate Activist mouth by @Twitter @TwitterIndia. I will come back stronger than before. I’m really very sad. 😭😭😭

Speaking on behalf of her daughter, she said she considered Twitter’s actions as an attempt to “suppress” Licypriya’s movement and voice.

She believed her daughter was unfairly singled out.

Twitter

However, the account was reinstated a few hours later and is now verified.

twitter OMG! I can’t believe this!!! Finally my twitter account got verified with blue tick ✊🏻✊🏻✊🏻.

Twitter

Licypriya’s parents said that an email from Twitter suggested they needed to update the account to “explicitly state” they are the ones running the account.

According to Twitter’s rules, you have to be at least 13 years old to set up and manage your own account if you have parental consent.

Licy,

They will restore the account but β€œthe bio needs to be updated to explicitly state that the account is run by the parents? This is to further prevent suspensions in the future as manage by Team Licy is a bit vague and doesn’t necessarily imply that a parent or legal guardian is the curator.”

Twitter

So Licypriya is back on Twitter and 100% official.

Nintendo Switch Nintendo’s special ‘Animal Crossing’ Switch is coming March 13th

by | Jan 31, 2020 | Gaming

Nintendo Switch

The first new Animal Crossing game on consoles in several years is almost here, and Nintendo is rolling out a special edition of its Switch to mark the occasion. This $300 Switch will arrive on March 13th, a week before the launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It’s covered in pastel colors, with two-toned Joy-Cons and a white dock that has some of the game’s characters painted on it. The only thing it doesn’t come with is the game itself — that you’ll have to buy separately.

It’s available for pre-order at Best Buy if you’re already throwing your money at the screen, or you can just buy the game by itself and play it on a normal Switch — your choice. On the other hand, if you can’t get enough but just don’t need another console, Nintendo is releasing themed “Aloha Edition” carrying case and screen protector packages on the 13th for both the Switch and Switch Lite. The real good news, though, is that after a slew of videogame delays — that included Animal Crossing slipping from its planned launch date last fall — it looks like this one is just about ready to go on March 20th.

Nintendo Switch ‘The Outer Worlds’ comes to Nintendo Switch on March 6th

by | Jan 31, 2020 | Gaming

Nintendo Switch

The space-set game earned plenty of plaudits last year, though it drew mixed reactions for its relatively short length for a single-player RPG. Some players completed it in less than 20 hours. Still, the compact running time might be more palatable if you’re playing it on Switch while you’re on the go. In any case, Obsidian plans to expand the story this year with DLC.

The Outer Worlds will be available in boxed (albeit with a download code instead of a game card) and digital versions on Switch. It’ll cost $60.

Nintendo Switch Nintendo says it won’t release a new Switch in 2020

by | Jan 31, 2020 | Gaming

Nintendo Switch

Taiwanese publication DigiTimes claimed earlier this month that the company is releasing a new model sometime in mid-2020, with volume production to begin this first quarter. There were a lot of speculations that it was going to be the Switch Pro. We still don’t know if Nintendo truly is working on a Pro version of the console, but Furukawa’s statement makes it clear that fans won’t be getting their hands on one this year even if a Pro model is in development.

Those who want to buy a Switch within the year have a few models to choose from, nevertheless. In the middle of 2019, Nintendo released an upgraded Switch that has a longer battery life than the original. A few months after that, it launched a purely portable iteration of the device called Switch Lite, which is available in three different colors and costs $100 less than the upgraded version of the regular console.
